Revisiting Kellie’s
Castle in Perak
This is a
bitter sweet hauntingly tale of a person’s quest that remains unfortunately
partially unfulfilled. A Scottish planter by the name of William Kellie Smith
arrived in Malaya to find riches and fame in 1890s. Despite his business
ventures brought him vast wealth and fame, his downfall at the same time
brought only deaths.

only remembered by tourists
Kellie’s
Castle (sometimes
also called Kellie’s Folly) is located near Batu Gajah, and is about 20
minutes’ drive from Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. Flocks of tourists from around the
country but many remember only the tales of the folly or mistakes of the one of
the most famous castle in the country.
Having
achieve immense wealth in the then Malaya, William Kellie Smith, decided to
head home in Scotland to marry his sweet heart lover Agnes and bring her home
to Malaya. When Agnes grew restless he promised to build for her a six-storey
mansion known as Kellie’s castle. This was a testament of a husband’s dream to
build a castle for his love of wife. Unfortunately, it remains a dream that was
not fulfilled as he passed away shortly after that. The construction of the
castle remained unfinished and the dreams unfulfilled.
