Boy With A Lantern

A man recounts of ghostly apparition in his old childhood house.

Miguel, 11 years at that time, his parents and siblings stay in the old bungalow in Mindanao, Philippine. The old bungalow was made up of timber and concrete and it was on a large piece of land.

One night, everybody was asleep except for Miguel who was busy with his Rubik’s cube and he had a torchlight on his bed with a blanket covering his body. The only light was a sole lamp in the corridor leading to the bedrooms and the wooo! sound from the heavy wind. Jose, Miguel’s younger brother was fast asleep opposite from Miguel’s bed. Miguel was so busy trying to figure out the Rubik’s cube when he noticed a weird bluish transparent light coming in the bedroom doorway. He was kindna shock and then he saw a young boy walking with a lantern with the bluish light surrounding him. The young boy with the blue light just walk passed the corridor to Miguel’s room.

The next morning, Miguel was so excited and told his family about the bluish light and the young boy holding a lantern. Instead his parents were so angry and his father threatened to beat him with a ‘rotan’  (cane) for making up that ridiculous story.

Miguel saw the ghostly apparition several times over the years and he was with Jose when they both saw the bluish boy with the lantern. Miguel together with Jose made to tell his parents what they saw but they did not fully believe the boys. However their mother started to put a candle and say prayers in their family altar.

Growing up in a Funeral Palour is an absolutely a spooky and unforgettable experience.

Heng Siew Fook is a retired Publications Director and leaves in Taiping, Perak. When he was growing up in Malacca in the 1950s, he used to stay on the 1^st floor of a shoplot. The ground floor was a Chinese Funeral Parlour and the owner rented the 1^st floor to his parents at very cheap rates although Siew Fook’s mother was strongly against that as most Chinese considered those places as taboo (bad luck). As Siew Fook’s father is only a labourer at a Godown (warehouse) and the sole breadwinner, Siew Fook’s parents with 4 children of their own, eventually reluctantly agreed.

Although ultimately Siew Fook’s family have got to the constant chanting, prayers, candles, the smell of incense and the feeling of utter depression from the funeral parlour, they found it much harder to deal with visions of apparitions. Some religious belief that the people who have passed away, have only 8 days to remain in this realm.

On one occasion, Siew Fook woke up one night to get a glass of water as the night’s damp, warm air was really extremely hot and humid. Drinking his water, he casually looked to moonless night at the front window when he noticed a dark wavy figure at the corner of the living room. Creeping slowly forward he saw an apparition of an old man who seemed to be lost in thoughts. He was clothed in the old fashion attire but he had no legs…the ghostly apparition only show above the knees. Not making any noise, Siew Fook quietly crept to his bedroom.

On another occasion, Siew Fook’s mother was woken up by strange wailings coming from the front living room. She quickly got up and went down and was shocked to see an apparition of a young girl crying on the floor. Siew Fook’s mother hurriedly went to the girl on the floor to ask what is wrong. The little girl said she missed her parents and she just wanted to go home. Siew Fook’s mother was moved to tears and consoled the little girl until dawn, when the little girl disappeared.

Siew Fook was reminiscing about his childhood memories when he said, “It is a tough life for so many people and it is must be tougher for the ghosts”.

Imran is a Graphics  executive in Kuala Lumpur and after his dinner, he felt bored and restless. His friends are off to trekking in Pahang and he was all alone. He could not go as he had to work and some of his assignments were due.

 He thought of going to Mantin as he had heard that little town which has an old cemetery was haunted. So he decided on driving all the way to Mantin to take a look. The cemetery was a bit scary in the dark, especially the trees and overgrown weeds. Still there was not much to see, so he finally decided to drive back to Kuala Lumpur after spending a few hours there.

Footnote : Mantin is a town in Malaysia. It is in the state/region of Negeri Sembilan. It is located about 50 km from Kuala Lumpur, and can be reached within 30 minutes from the Sungei Besi toll in Kuala Lumpur.

 

A Typical Fresh Fruit Stall

He decided to use the old road which was not very well lighted and he turned his music on his player. As he passed the old road he noticed that the fruit stalls along the road were empty (which is normal considering the time of about 2am). The whole side road and the fruit seller stalls were practically deserted.

Then when he passed the 7 stall, he saw a woman and her child at their stall and he unconsciously braked to slow down his car. The woman and her child were happily sitting and playing a plastic ball by themselves at their stall. He wondered, why the woman’s and the child’s faces were so drastically white and pale. Only when the woman went to pick up a ball for her child, he noticed that she was kind of floating….Good God! awkk...he realized that both of them are not alive! He fell on his accelerator and he sped off and he did not stop until he was back in Kuala Lumpur.
