Spooky Grandmas’ Stories

Spooky Grandmas’ Stories

The special ties and bonds that grandparents have for their grandchildren are probably one of the greatest cherish relationship of all. I have for you 2 very special, touching but eerie stories about grandmas when they have passed away.

Pearl was only about 7 years old (mid 1970s) at that time and her grandma was coming from Terengganu in two weeks’ time for Pearl’s birthday. However shortly before Pearl’s grandma can make the trip to Malacca, she passed away suddenly but peacefully.

Pearl’s parents had to rushed down to Terengganu to prepare for Pearl’s grandma funeral. Pearl was not allowed to go because she had to go to school and maybe Pearl’s parents did not want Pearl to face heartbreak of her grandma’s funeral.

After Pearl’s parents got back from the funeral, they noticed that Pearl was still distressed about her grandmother’s sudden death. Pearl had not wanted a birthday party that year but her parents persuaded her to have a small celebration in their house.

That night after the celebration, after presents from her family, she walked to the living room when the old dialing phone (or rotary phone) started to ring continuously. Pearl tried to look for her parents but realized they were at the back in the kitchen.

Ghostly Girl at Lantern Festival

Ghostly Girl at Lantern Festival

A housewife was chatting with her neighbours when she saw a young girl alone with her lantern away from the other kids.

Chinese Lantern Festival (Pesta Tanglung) falls in September on the eighth month of the year. Although celebrated by the Chinese it also in recent years attracted many multiracial followers.

Lillian Tong a housewife was furious with her husband who had unexpectedly got to meet a client that night. “Why he can’t say no,” she fumed knowing that they have promised to take their son to a neighbourhood lantern procession.

After her husband left, Lillian decided to take her son with his lantern to the parade which was a few blocks away from their house. When they arrived their son happily joined the rest of the kids with their lanterns. Lillian also met Miriam and her husband who were keeping an eye on their kids.

As they were busy chatting, Lillian realized that there was a little girl who was alone and standing away far away from the rest of the children. The little girl was dressed in a little white gown with her tanglung. Lillian then said to Miriam that she was going to ask and invite the little girl to join the parade.

Cendol Seller during Hungry Ghost Month

Cendol Seller during Hungry Ghost Month

A Cendo street seller on Hungry Ghost Month meets an unforgettable and frightening encounter with a ghost.
Kalimuthu is  Cendol street vendor for over 25 years and he travels to different places in Butterworth in Penang where he sells to his take-away customers. Kalimuthu makes cendol strips by personally by hand (actually by his wife… ha!ha!) and together with the red beans, sweet corn, shaved iced and of course with ‘gula melaka’(yeah!), it provides a unique flavor to the cendol which he sells to his customers.

A Bowl of Cendol

On that particular evening, he was in a field around Assumption school where some school boys had finished with the football game and after the game, some of them had gather to drink from his stall. They were gathered drinking, chatting busily about the game and it was getting late when they left.

Kalimuthu was gathering the used plastic bowls and spoons when he noticed a small boy (around 7 to 8 years old) standing faced to the back of Kalimuthu. The other boys who were drinking were around 14 to 15 years and this boy was much younger. Thinking it must be a younger brother to one of the boys, he asked “Are you done?” while clearing the used bowls and spoons.
