Ghosts Everywhere!

There are ghosts and they can be anywhere!

A Taoist sifu (master) said to me that most people do not seemed to realize but ghosts can come and go anywhere. The Chinese for example called them as wandering or roaming ghosts. (would really appreciate if anybody could provide these type of ghosts of Malay, Indians, Iban, etc)  These ghosts or departed spirits will roam anywhere but probably within the country.

Mrs Cheong told me about the eerie experience that her son and daughter had in a public tuition center. Her son Troy, 15 year-old, had finished his English class and was waiting for his younger sister, Kandi, for her music class to be over in another hour.

Troy went back to the usual mamak stall and with a coke he sat faced sideways with his stool and his back resting on the table. After thirty minutes he heard a voice at the back  of his table. It was Kandi and she was looking at Troy as he casually asked, “Tuition over?”

Kandi did not reply but was just looking at him with a crazy smirk like smile. Crazy girl, Troy thought as he went back to game on his phone. Ten minutes later he felt his sister tugging on his back shoulder which he shrugged off.

Bernard Ng agreed to look after their aunty’s place during her holiday visit to Taiwan with her other mahjong ‘aunties’. Bernard, his sister May and his mum will visit the apartment for a week during that time. Her aunty lived in an apartment in Sri Mutiara Apartment in Sungei Besi at Kuala Lumpur.

A couple of nights later when they were sleeping, Bernard heard the sound of someone dropping marbles or pebbles on the outside floor tiles. After a while he got up irritated when the sound did not stop….thoonk! thoonk! as he walked from the bedroom door and he found May peering at their bedroom door (mum was asleep). Before he could say anything, the sound of dropping marbles or pebbles suddenly stopped. They both went to turn the lights on from the living room but it was quiet and silent. Must be some neighbours kids, Bernard told his sister although he found it strange that the kids will be playing marbles at 3am.

The night before his aunty came back from Taiwan, the three of them were in the living room when Bernard suggested going to supper at some hawker stalls. His mother and May were not interested so he went off by himself. 

As Bernard got on the lift he noticed that he was not alone, there was a young striking lady inside the lift. As he got on the lift he saw she must be in her twenties with a sexy body-hugging dress with a flawless skin. He quickly said “hullo…going out?” but she did not even reply or acknowledge his presence, preoccupied and busy with her handphone. Walking to further behind the lift he thought “So stuck-up mer”.

A man relates some of his spooky and frightening experiences while working in the old Capitol Cinema.

I remember as a teenager my friends and I would spend our time at the many cinemas in the late 1970s. Apart from cinema shows, we had a great time chit-chatting among ourselves and of course trying to pick up girls (not very successful....) 

Ah Fook who at that time, was working as an assistant manager at the Capitol cinema at Seremban in Negeri Sembilan. As an assistant manager he also had to work as a cashier at the ticketing booth and as the ticketing attendant when some staff were resigned or quit. Over time he told us of his most spooky and frightening experiences working at the movie house.

In the first incident, 2 girls were in the cinema when halfway through the show when the first girl had to go to the toilet. She asked the other girl to accompany her was so engrossed with the movie and merely grumbled. Both the girls entered the female toilet and the first girl rushed to a cubicle. When she was done she went to a basin to wash her hand when she heard flushing sound from another cubicle in the toilet. She waited patiently for her friend but after 10 minutes, she asked her friend to hurry up at the same time she shoved the door leading to the cubicle.

The cubicle was empty!...puzzled the first girl quickly looked back at the series of basins or sinks ... with the taps with water on full blast! The first girl just screamed and screamed. It was said that the second girl did not follow her friend as she was engrossed with the movie and the first girl was the actually alone!

This is the 2^nd part of “Hungry Ghost Festival-Old Housewives Recollections” which I previously wrote. This is about the experiences of “aunties” (I guess I am an “old uncle”…sob!) about the eerie and unnatural but real-life incidents that they have encountered.

4^th Experience

Burning of Joss Sticks for Hungry Ghost Festival

Mrs. Ching told us about her strange and weird encountered when she was young schoolgirl. During that month, Hungry Ghost Month to specific, many people burned incense, joss sticks, paper money etc (“yim poh lup chook”- a Cantonese translation, I hope I got it right) during this occasion, on roadsides, street corners and back lanes.

Hungry Ghost Month is celebrated by people and those especially by those who are exceptionally are afraid of being disturbed by wandering ghosts.

The Hungry Ghost Month is held on the 14th day of the seventh lunar month (in August or September) every year. During this month, it is believed the king of hell opens the gates of hell to allow ghosts to visit the living world. It is the only time of year that ghosts are released to freely roam the Earth.

Murali who works in Malaysia has gone for a month long holiday to his hometown in Hyderbad, India. Meeting with his mother, siblings and other relatives, he had a good reunion with them and with his childhood friends.

 When he finally got back at 1am, he took a cab to Taman Nirwana in Kuala Lumpur where he is staying at a small rented flat. While waiting for the lifts he noticed that a young woman was also waiting. The woman was standing in front of him and she seemed to be preoccupied with somebody at her mobile phone.

The Lift at the Flat

At long last the lift arrived the young girl went in first whereas Murali had to lugged his baggage. After grabbing his luggage, Murali was astonished and slightly confused when he realized that he was alone in the lift, the woman was not there. Turning his head, he quickly looked at the empty block and found it deserted - nobody was around she has disappeared, due to the late (or early) hour of the night. Scare and frightened by the incident he hurriedly grabbed his belongings for the lift and left.

He spent the remaining night by himself at the nearby children’s playground till morning. Murali was later told by an old Chinese lady that it was the celebration of Chinese Hungry Ghost Month, and the old Chinese lady warned that everybody must be careful of wandering spirits.

Murali still live in his flat but he does not take the lift anymore – whether it is day or night!
